CONSERVE AND SUSTAINABLY USE THE OCEANS, SEAS, AND MARINE RESOURCES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
ENVIRONMENTAL OUTREACH
Through the 2023-2024 academic year, USJ held a series of environmental education activities, including our participation in the 43rd Macau Green Week Carnival, inspiring the community with green initiatives and interactive games. This event promotes environmental awareness and aligns with SDG 14 by encouraging sustainable practices that protect marine ecosystems.
DIRECT ACTION
Our Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) is unique in Macao for its academic focus. Much of the Institute’s direct-action work is centred on Mangrove Conservation. Mangroves provide numerous ecosystem benefits, coastal protection, and carbon sequestration, placing them at the forefront of climate change adaptation and mitigation measures.
In the academic year 2023-2024, we continued our ongoing commitment to Mangrove Planting. Additionally, several Coastal Cleanups were organised to improve the cleanliness of Macao’s coastal area, keeping our oceans safe and healthy.
PARTNERSHIP
In the 2023-2024 academic year, USJ launched the Sino-Portugal Joint Lab for Marine and Environmental Sciences— between the Institute of Science and Environment, USJ, Centre of Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry of Universidade Católica Portuguesa (CBQF-UCP) Porto, Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA), and Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS). The extensive objectives of this laboratory are to cultivate scientific cooperation between Portugal and China, through Macao, in the fields of marine and environmental sciences, promoting the development of a sustainable blue economy for the future.
On Earth Day 2024, we partnered with Colégio Mateus Ricci for a day of action and inspiration, emphasising the importance of climate action and environmental protection. This event aimed to engage students and the community in activities that promote sustainability.
